This techique is used for any research/digitisation that requires to visualize internal structures or as a digitisation tool prior to destructive analysis, for geometric morphometrics, etc. Several different options/manufacturers exist. Pipeline

Positioning the specimen within the scanning container and within the scanner can take some time; especially when detailed scans of a larger specimen are requested.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

projections need to be reconstructed into slices. During this process several corrections or filtering can be carried out, which can take some time in case of the presence of scanning artefacts. After slices computations, manual segmentation might be required to extract 3D models. Extracting and cleaning of a 3D model can take from 30 minutes to several hours or even days.

 

Cost(s)
Preparation time: can be from several minutes to days depending on staining or prior visualization enhancement protocols.
-Digitization procedure: The scanning of one specimen can be done within a few minutes; on average a scan takes about one hour, but can take several hours depending on the size of the scanning area and the available flux. -Image analysis: reconstruction of slices and calculation of meshes takes about 30 minutes but can take longer if many projections are necessary or many slices need to be segmented.
